❌ Mistake no. 4 — Wanting to buy everything from the start
A large table.
The most high-end model.
A trolley filled with accessories.
After all, if more is possible, less must be easier… right?
Not necessarily. When buying their first welding table, it is easy to be tempted to plan for every possible scenario.
The result?
Accessories bought “just in case”… that ultimately never leave the trolley.
Instead, start with what you really need on a daily basis:
clamps,
stops,
squares,
prisms,
→ then add to your equipment as you go.
There are also professional alternatives to the major established brands today. So there is no need to set aside an excessive budget to start working properly on a welding table.
First buy what saves you time. The rest will come as your needs develop.
❌ Mistake no. 5 — Thinking that “thicker = stronger = better”
10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm…
When comparing several steel tables, it may seem natural to think that you should choose the thickest worktop possible.
But do you really need 25 mm of steel?
It all depends on your trade.
A metalworker who mainly makes railings, gates or staircases generally works on relatively light structures.
A boilermaker who regularly assembles parts weighing several hundred kilos has completely different requirements.
The thickness must therefore be consistent with:
the weight of your parts,
the stresses placed on the worktop,

Don’t look for the thickest steel. Look for the thickness suited to your trade.
❌ Mistake no. 6 — Thinking you absolutely need a nitrided table
Nitriding is becoming increasingly common on professional welding tables.
And it offers real advantages.
Better surface resistance.
Less adhesion of welding spatter.
Easier worktop maintenance.
Better wear resistance.
So…
Do you necessarily need to buy a nitrided table?
No.
Before paying the extra cost, simply ask yourself a few questions:
Will my table be used every day?
Does my activity require intensive use?
Do I want to invest immediately in a higher-end solution?
Does my budget allow it?
For a professional who uses their table every day and wants to invest for the long term, nitriding can be particularly worthwhile.
But if you are new to working on a welding table or your use remains moderate, a good standard steel table can do the job perfectly well.
You can always upgrade when your activity and needs evolve.
Nitriding is an advantage. Not a requirement.
❌ Mistake no. 7 — Forgetting the most important criterion: flatness
A beautiful finish.
A thick worktop.
Dozens of accessories.
An attractive price.
Very good.
But is your table actually flat?
Because ultimately, a welding table is above all a precision tool.
Its purpose is to enable you to:
position your parts correctly,
clamp them precisely,
reproduce your assemblies,
save time during manufacturing.
If the worktop has significant distortions, part of this value is lost.
That is why you need to look beyond the table’s appearance:
specified flatness,
hole accuracy,
grid consistency,
overall manufacturing quality.
Any savings made at the time of purchase can quickly disappear in hours spent on adjustment, inspection and rework.
A precision table must begin by being… precise.
So, which welding table should you choose?
After these 7 mistakes, you will have understood:
There is no one perfect table for everyone.
Metalworkers, boilermakers, locksmiths and production workshops do not work with the same parts, dimensions or loads.
Before buying, start with your reality:
your trade,
your parts,
your available space,
how often you will use it,
and your budget.
The best welding table is not necessarily the one with the most options, the thickest worktop or the highest price.
It is the one that enables you to work faster, more simply and with greater precision in your workshop.
And ultimately, that is the objective: for the tool to adapt to your manufacturing, not the other way around.
