Are you considering buying a welding table?
On paper, the choice seems fairly simple:
One size.
One clamping system.
A few accessories.
And you’re ready to go.
In reality, it’s a little more complicated.
A poorly suited table can quickly become a bad investment: too large for your workshop, an unsuitable clamping system or insufficient build quality.
So before reaching for your credit card, here are the first 3 mistakes to avoid.
❌ Mistake No. 1 — Choosing between a 16 and 28 system… without really knowing why 16 or 28?
This is probably one of the first questions we ask ourselves when looking for a welding table.
But what do these numbers actually refer to?
Quite simply, the diameter of the clamping holes: Ø16 mm or Ø28 mm.
And above all, 28 does not automatically mean "better".
System 16
Ideal for precision work, lightweight structures and small- to medium-sized parts.
System 28
More robust, it is better suited to heavy parts and work requiring significant clamping forces.
A metalworker who mainly manufactures railings will not necessarily have the same needs as a boilermaker working on structures weighing several hundred kilos.
So don’t choose the largest system. Choose the one that matches what you manufacture.
❌ Mistake No. 2 — Looking at the price… but not at how the table is made
Two welding tables can look almost identical in a photo.
Same dimensions.
Same steel thickness.
Same number of holes.
And yet, the final quality can be very different.
One of the points to consider is how the tabletop is manufactured.
CNC machining or laser cutting?
With some low-cost offers, the processes used and heat control during manufacturing can affect:
→ the finish,
→ deformation,
→ and above all, the flatness of the tabletop.
And this is where it becomes important.
Because a welding table is not simply a large metal plate with holes.
It is a precision tool.
If your table is not sufficiently flat, your work may suffer the consequences.
So never compare two tables solely on price. Also compare their manufacturing method and tolerances.
❌ Mistake No. 3 — Thinking that « bigger = better »
A 3-metre table is necessarily better than a 2-metre table…
Really?
In a workshop, every square metre counts.
A table that is too large potentially means:
→ less room to move around,
→ permanent clutter,
→ more weight,
→ and above all, a higher investment.
Instead, ask yourself this question:
« What size parts do I manufacture 80 to 90% of the time? »
If most of your projects fit comfortably on a more compact table, why buy one that is much larger?
Especially since extensions and accessories are available to enlarge the working surface when needed.
You can therefore have a compact table for everyday use…
…and enlarge it only when your work requires it.
Adapt the table to your workshop, not your workshop to the table.
